CPG Q4 Copyright Managers Symposium Is Held at GTCOM to Explore How AI Empowers the Publishing Industry

On December 17, 2019, the "Q4 Copyright Managers Symposium of China Publishing Group Corporation (CPG)" was held at Global Tone Communication Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "GTCOM"). More than 50 leaders, experts, and senior practitioners with CPG and its affiliated companies--including China Publishing & Media Holdings Co., Ltd., People's Literature Publishing House, The Commercial Press, SDX Joint Publishing Company, Zhonghua Book Company, Encyclopedia of China Publishing House, and China National Publications Import & Export (Group) Corporation (CNPIEC)--exchanged opinions on the Chinese publishing industry's exploration and practice of "going global" along with topics such as the question of how information technologies like big data and artificial intelligence (AI) can empower the industry's development.

He introduced the visit of the CPG delegation to Tanzania, Kenya and South Africa. Yang Xiaoming, copyright manager of The Commercial Press, expressed her gains and thoughts after attending the fifteenth Venezuela International Book Fair. Liu Yongchun, deputy editor-in-chief of China Translation & Publishing House, shared his gains and work-related experiences during his work in France and Germany. Shen Zuohong, editor-in-chief of Beijing World Publishing Corporation, Yang Zhen, director of the Editorial Department, Encyclopedia of China Publishing House, and Lei Jianhua, director of the Overseas Business Center, CNPIEC, talked about their exploration and thoughts after attending the 2019 Frankfurt Book Fair. Wang Ruiling, director of the Overseas Department, Zhonghua Book Company, introduced the China-South Korea Book Copyright Trade Fair and the activities that promote the masterpieces of famous writers.

GTCOM CEO Eric Yu, in his address to the forum, detailed the support that AI and big data represent for the publishing industry. Ms. Jiao Fengjiao, an editor at Encyclopedia of China Publishing House, shared her experiences and thought of machine translation based on her professional approach.

Mr. Yu assumed that the press and publishing circle will usher in great opportunities by upholding the strategic objective of "going global and bringing in," breaking the barriers of language, culture, and regional differences, and creating a big data-based ecosystem of publishing, social contact, and e-commerce. He introduced the exploration and gains of GTCOM of the empowerment of the industry via AI and big data from the following aspects, including opportunities of the press and publishing industry in the era of AI and big data, machine translation supporting the publishing industry to "go global" and "bring in," big data assisting in the public opinion monitoring of the press and publishing industry, and AI supporting market analysis and topic selection.

Mr. Yu asserted that, in the context of the requirements and challenges of "going global" and "bringing in" for the cultural industry, the application of machine translation is promising. GTCOM will comprehensively promote Chinese culture to "go global" and "bring in" quality cultures from abroad and vigorously push the quality development of the industry by relying on its 46-year language translation services and brand advantages, cutting-edge machine translation technology team, supremacy in corpora and data resource, profound foundation and capacity of machine translation, and AI-based language technology products targeting at the press and publishing industry, such as webpage translation, video translation, aided translation systems.

Encyclopedia of China Publishing House has taken the lead in empowering the publishing industry via machine translation. Jiao Fengjiao expressed that the GTCOM machine translation technology was introduced for the first time in the English translation of the third version of entries of the Volume of Mechanical Engineering, the Encyclopedia of China. The contents translated included industrial robots, precision processing, micro-nano manufacturing, instruments, and intelligent manufacturing. Upon review, the Editorial Department and the expert team pointed out that the terminology of subjects was translated accurately. The expression was smooth. The overall quality was good. Semantics could be further improved.

Li Yan, the Dean of the Confucius Institute, the University of Waterloo, Canada, shared the promotion of Chinese culture overseas on the theme of "On the Promotion of Chinese Culture Overseas." Li Yan mentioned that countries vary by cultural backgrounds and beliefs. While introducing Chinese culture to the world, we should adhere to the concepts of "seeking the root, tracing to the source, maintaining harmony in diversity, and seeking common ground while reserving differences," raise cultural confidence, break cultural barriers, enhance the overseas recognition of Chinese culture, and effectively disseminate Chinese culture.

Introducing Chinese culture to the world is of vital significance for promoting China's foreign economic exchanges and cooperation, building up the country, and improving the national image. CPG, as a member of the national team of the publishing industry, has focused on mainstream publishing, integrated development, and international communication and assisted in the wholesome development of the Chinese publishing industry and the going global of Chinese culture.
